Tucked away behind layers of scaffolding and dwarfed by checkpoint charlie and the hoardes of tourists outside, Cafe Adler is a suprising gem of a cafe in the midst of "revived" (and uglified) Berlin. In a city that has too many cafes, it is hard to come across something that really sticks out. I like Adler because it has that really old-school feel of Old Europe: a long wooden countertop, crown molding along the ceiling, tiled floors. We went there on a very rainy day and despite the place being completely full we were able to get a table. The cafe had a real old-timer feel to it. The people next to us drank shots chased by healthy looking beers. We ordered delicious soup, no coffee, although we've had the coffee there before. Initially we were tempted by the cakes, however our stomachs rumbled for salty so we opted for a proper lunch instead. The only thing the atmosphere lacked was some music. Billie Holiday or Nina Simone, something cool and tragic, wispy like the cigarette smoke that used to fill the air there prior to the German smoking ban....
