De Markten is easy to miss because the decor is not particularly special or attractive. Still, it has become a staple in our coffee outings. In fact, I took my mom there on her recent visit. De Markten is superbly located in the center of Brussels at Place St. Catherine. It is the café that magically appears right when you think "man, I sure could use a coffee now". It's conveniently located close to hotels and the Grande Place without being in the super touristy area... so you can take visitors there to get a feel for the locals. When I went with my mom, the weather was absolutely stunning. We sat outside on the large plaza in the middle of the street. The street was closed off for construction which conveniently kept away the asphalt-hungry Brussels drivers. Unfortunately, the construction going on involved lots of drilling, pounding and dumping dusty rocks all over the place, so it was a full-on sensorial assault of noise and coughing. Despite this, we had a lovely lunch and a delicious, strong coffee. They serve Côte D'or chocolates with the coffee which is simply sinful and divine. After being in Brussels a while, I've come to appreciate the size of the city and the limited number of cafés worth hanging out in. De Markten is one of those cafés where you are sure to bump into someone, and doubly sure if you work in the performing arts. It's just one of those hang-out spots where freelancers meet or working people take their coffee break or have informal team conferences. And at night, it's a great pre-show place to grab a drink, lively without the over-the-top gross factor of neighbouring Place St. Géry. |
