Blomqvist is my number one recommendation to people who are looking for great coffee in Brussels. The coffee there is rich and aromatic and trickles out of the machine like dark syrup. But I also appreciate Blomqvist for the elegant minimalism of its decor: a warm wood interior with a few tables and a large, wooden counter. The store has a single, floor to ceiling window that faces the street and a couple of small tables outside for terrace seating on those rare, rainless Brussel Sundays. P. and I have spent many hours at that window watching life in the street. The understated nature of the place has a contemplative and energizing effect on me. Perhaps smooth, warm, understated spaces allow the people that inhabit them to fill the space with ideas and good cheer. At Blomqvist this is definitely the case. The owner/barrista is simply a nice guy who seems genuinely happy that you're in his coffee shop. He's happy to chat, he's happy to leave you alone for hours on end. As a result, you feel welcome. And all these feelings combined have led me to go there as my place of creative refuge. I always seem to have the best writing/thinking sessions there. Over a cup of excellent coffee. I just wish it weren't uphill from where I live. |
